How Script Breakdown in Production Works?

In pre-production phase, the first important thing to do is breaking down the script given by director. This is where video production team analyse and make a list every elements needed to be prepared before production phase. The elements are:

  • Filming location
  • Cast
  • Wardrobe
  • Props
  • Special effects

From the list above, as a Production Manager like me, I will focusing on preparing filming location and searching talent for casting only. The rest will be prepared by Art Department team. So this is how I complete my task for script breakdown.

Filming location

From the script, I have to identified what kind of filming location will be involved in the video production project. Then I will start to find the most suitable location and get approval from director. If the script requires a house then you can start looking for a house.

Cast

From the script, I have to identified what kind of character will be involved in the video production project. Then I will start to search talent and filtered by casting each of them. If the talent get good impression from director and me, then we will offer the job.

Budget

After each elements in script breakdown fulfilled, then it is time to planning on the budget. The budget in video production project will be consist of cost on talent, food, props, transportation and etc.

So this is 1 of many process in pre-production phase. Production phase will be never on if the pre-production phase not yet completed. I hope this article will give you a good brief idea on script breakdown. Till next blog post!
